The cat in the bush

I were given an analogy one afternoon a few years ago:

If the bird is too focused on cracking open the nut, it might not see the cat in the bush.

In this analogy, the bird will most probably die, and the cat will have a meal.  The more I started to think about this analogy, the more situations in life I could draw comparisons too.

In our societies these days, we are so focused on our day to day lives that we often miss the important things that really matter. I know for a fact that I am completely guilty of this.

The last 3 years were interesting times.  I’m of the belief that it were sent for a reason, to show the human race, all our shortcoming’s, yet everyone wanted “normality” back. This actually makes me very sad.

Don’t understand me wrong. I do not believe that the harsh lockdowns, which were implemented in some countries, were right. The whole situation were handled wrong by most governments, as they were caught completely off guard. This highlighted one aspect that were lacking … healthcare.

It also highlighted that air pollution came down dramatically in that period. I watched that maps constantly, and it made me realize exactly what we as a species were doing to our planet.  Suddenly wild animals appeared in our cities. This highlighted the fact that we constrain nature, with our own greed.

It forced families to co-exist again and not apart. Families live apart in this rat race we made a reality in our lives. The world were shown a way to work from home, as we have the technology to do it. In that process, people realized that suddenly they have more hours in a day, than they used to.  Yet, when restrictions were lifted, everyone headed back to offices. This makes no sense to me. I for one were much more productive and distressed.

The world were hit with a massive mental health situation, as people started to struggle with being with themselves, and not the group.

And all of the above begs the question … Did we see the cat in the bush, or did we fall back into the “normal” everyone wanted, and brought everything back to the mess it was before?

Many saw the light that came with the chaos, the majority just fell back into it.

The moral of this post I would like to leave you with, is that if you are in the moment, no matter if it is at work, home, in nature or even just by yourself, see the WHOLE moment, not just what you want to see. If you take the time to really listen and look around you, wonder will behold you, plus, you will see the cat in the bush.

And it goes beyond saying, that the screen you hold in your hand should not be part of that moment. Make time in a day to just switch it off.
